How to Prepare Your Home for Roof Work

Get ready for your roofing project with this simple preparation checklist. Learn how to prepare your home, family, and property for a smooth, professional installation.

Introduction

Having a new roof installed or major repairs carried out is an exciting improvement for your home - but it can raise a few questions about how best to prepare. At Revive Roofing and Building Solutions, we do everything we can to minimise disruption, protect your property, and keep things running smoothly.

Here's a simple guide on how to prepare your home, family, and surroundings for a professional roofing project.

1. Clear Access to Your Property

To help our team set up efficiently and safely:

  • Leave space on your driveway (or outside your home) for skips and material deliveries
  • Unlock any side gates or access points we'll need to reach the roof or scaffolding area
  • If you share access with neighbours, it may be helpful to give them a heads-up

If access is particularly restricted, we'll have already discussed alternative solutions during our initial site visit.

2. Secure the Inside of Your Home

Roof work can cause vibrations or dust. To protect your belongings:

  • Remove fragile items from walls or shelves in loft spaces or upper rooms
  • Cover items stored in the loft with dust sheets or remove them if necessary
  • Ensure attic hatches are closed and accessible if we need loft entry

We will treat your home with respect, but preparation helps protect valuables and keeps things tidy.

3. Consider Pets and Children

Roofing can be noisy and involve unfamiliar people and equipment around your home. For safety and peace of mind:

  • Keep pets indoors or in a quiet part of the house during working hours
  • Make sure children are supervised and aware of off-limits areas like scaffolding or skip zones

We work carefully and responsibly, but your help ensures everyone stays safe.

4. Be Weather Aware (We Always Are)

We constantly monitor the weather forecast to ensure we're working in safe and suitable conditions. In extreme cases:

  • We may delay the start or pause work briefly to avoid working in dangerous conditions
  • We will always communicate clearly and re-schedule where necessary

You don't need to worry about predicting the weather - we handle that. But flexibility helps if things need adjusting slightly.

5. Let Us Know of Any Special Requirements

Every property is unique. If there's anything you think we should know ahead of the start date, such as:

  • Fragile garden structures, furniture or ornaments
  • Noise sensitivities, medical needs, or special access requirements
  • Limited working hours (e.g. due to childcare or business use)

Just let us know in advance. We'll do everything we can to accommodate your needs and adjust our plan accordingly.

6. Trust Our Setup & Safety Procedures

We handle all site preparation, including:

  • Erecting and inspecting scaffolding to safety standards
  • Completing all Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
  • Installing warning signage and safety zones
  • Protecting your roofline, garden and pathways during works

All work is monitored by our IOSH-qualified Health & Safety Manager and follows strict compliance with Work at Height Regulations 2005.

You don't need to lift a finger - just give us access, and we'll do the rest safely and professionally.
